West European 1st half passenger car sales 2015June sees 22nd successive car sales  gain in a row

After the unexpectedly firm start to this year’s West European car sales season and just a momentary pause for breath in May, when underlying car recovery growth slowed notably to just 0.2 per cent, last month the market seems to have regained its stride with June sales growing at the fastest pace since September 2013

Characterised by a continuing erosion in market share and awash in red ink, in Western Europe things have not quite gone the Ford way in the past few years, or for that matter the past couple of decades. During the whole of last year, with its car market share skidding to a new record low of just 7.3 per cent, Ford of Europe posted a pre-tax loss of $1.06bn followed by a pre-tax loss of $185m during this year’s first quarter.

PSA Passenger car sales history in-depth reportHard-pressed PSA remains mere shadow of its former self

The good news for PSA Peugeot-Citroën’s newly arrived bigwigs is that in terms of financial health PSA has been wheeled out of intensive care, thanks in large measure to vital cash injections from both Dongfeng and the French government. The not so good news is that PSA is still struggling to get decent prices for its cars, thereby limiting its endeavours to make some decent returns on the now closely watched profitability side of its business

This April, combined sales of Renault and Dacia rose notably faster than the already fast recovering overall car market. In a clear break with recent sales patterns, it is not the Dacia budget brand that set the fastest pace, but the Renault brand. Renault’s West European April sales, kept in the fast lane by high ongoing demand for its remarkably well received Captur Crossover, rose 15.8 per cent.
