AID compiled figures reveal that new car sales this August went through the roof. That’s the initial cheery message from last month’s car sales results from the vast majority of West European car markets. The latest pole-vault jump this August brings the region’s cumulative car sales gain at the 8-months stage to around 5 per cent
West Europe’s definitive August car sales statistics due later this week are expected to show astonishing growth of around a quarter.
Although the full set of August result will not be known for at least a day or two, judged provisionally from the striking turnout in many of the region’s tell-tale markets, likelihood now is that last month’s new car sales could conceivably set a new all-time record for this particular month.
However, soaraway August car sales numbers are not so much a sign of a strongly accelerating new car market. Instead, these rosy August numbers are mainly the result of a one-off market distortion.
It is likely that West Europe’s bumper August car sales will exceed most, if not all, of the already optimistic earlier sales predictions.
A case in point, August saw outwardly impressive gains ranging from a sizzling 48.7 per cent in Spain, 40 per cent in France, 41.8 per cent in the Netherlands and 24.7 per cent in Germany.
