West European passenger car sales May 2018

Last month's new car sales in Western Europe, following three months of growth in the past four months, remained virtually unchanged, AID compiled figures show. This has pegged new registrations at 6.5m for the first 5 months of the year – still 1.5 per cent up on the same period of 2017

Judged purely from hard numbers, new car sales in May this year were virtually unchanged from a year-ago, raising renewed doubts about the underlying momentum of this year’s overall new car market in Western Europe.

However, the outwardly disappointing regional May car sales result was better than some analysts had expected

Including major markets such as Germany and Italy, only a handful of markets saw a decline in May car sales.

However, there was one fewer working day in the month than in May last year, suggesting once more that the market’s true underlying demand was statistically distorted.

Despite that drawback, May sales were still higher than during the same month last year in the majority of markets monitored by AID every month.
