Resilience of Turkey’s car market defies expectations

Turkey car market in-depth report

At least until now, the Turkish car market made a habit of defying even the most pessimistic predictions. That’s doubly underlined by a far milder and only short-lived downturn in fateful 2017 and three successive monthly car sales gains in this year’s four months to April. Already one third through the year, with cumulative sales of 177,420 units, Turkey’s new car sales remain 2 per cent up on the same time last year

Turkey’s new car market, in defiance of widespread earlier gloom scenarios, quickly brushed aside the initial ill-effects of the unsuccessful coup attempt in 2016.

The widely expected steep dip in new car sales in 2017 was notable mainly for its absence. Far from collapsing as was widely expected, last year’s sales eased back by a comparatively moderate 4.5 per cent to 722,759 units.

Put into the context of recent years, that still ranks as Turkey’s third highest car sales year on record, topped only by slightly higher sales in pre-coup 2016 and 2015.
