March truck business slackens, pulled down by shorter working month

Truck sales Q1 W. EUrope history 2018 - 2007

West Europeís March sales of heavy trucks in the 16t and above weight category dropped 5.5 per cent. Significantly, the regionís truck market, echoing the picture already seen in the March car market, was expected to suffer a notable setback because of last month's loss of between one and two working days

As March had fewer working days than last year, West Europeís registrations of heavy trucks showed a 5.5 per cent fall last month, narrowing this yearís first quarter truck sales gain for the sector to just under 1 percentage point, according to Acea sales numbers.

Germany, the regionís biggest market for trucks and where March had two fewer working days, March heavy truck sales fell 10.5 per cent, thus creating a sales shortfall of 6.4 per cent for this yearís first quarter.

The fallout from a notably shorter working month also made its negative mark on the vast majority of the regionís truck markets.

Of the 18 West European markets usually tracked by AID, only Belgium and France recorded a sales gain in March.

All the remaining 16 market saw sales fall by between 2.8 per cent in the Netherlands and 43.2 per cent in Luxembourg.

Apart from France all the regionís remaining major markets failed to match last yearís March sales, Acea figures show.
