UK’s consumers dump tarred diesels in droves, but they are not heading for electric car safe haven

UK car sales fuel mix history

UK consumers may now be leaving the leaky diesel ship in droves, but they are certainly not yet ready for the earlier anticipated switch to pure electric cars or plug-in hybrids

Not only did UK electric car demand catch on far slower than some fast-growth dreamers had earlier expected, latest hard figures from the SMMT suggest that so far this year demand has actually lurched into reverse.

Two months sales of financially subsidised Leaf-type electric cars (BEVs) took a headlong 33.7 per cent plunge to just 990 units after taking a 26.5 per cent dive during February itself, according to official SMMT sales numbers.

By comparison, February sales of diesel-fuelled cars slumped 23.5 per cent, bringing the sales shortfall after just two months to 24.9 per cent.

But more telling of the diesel market’s underlying woes, the UK’s cumulative diesel car sales penetration to February plunged almost 10 percentage points from 45 per cent last year to 35.6 per cent.
