W Europe back to pre-crisis levels

Two months through the year and Europe’s autoindustry was treated to yet another rare nugget of good news. For the second month running, West Europe’s new car market has comfortably topped last year’s same month sales, raising hopes that this year’s underlying regional new car demand appears to be holding up a great deal better than generally anticipated. Germany, with a strong 7.4 per cent car sales gain this February and a two month sales gain of 9.5 per cent currently stands out as Europe’s growth locomotive

West Europe’s new cars sales grew by a moderate 3.5 per cent this February according to AID’s provisional sales figures, boosting autoindustry hopes that the market’s long-entrenched car sales recovery can be kept on the road for yet another year.

AID’s provisional figures reveal that February’s new car sales were equal or higher than they were during the same month a year ago in eight of the regions seventeen markets regularly monitored by AID.

Among the region’s major markets, only the UK and Italy posted lower sales last month.

Among the middle ranks of Europe’s car markets, February sales fell in both Belgium and Switzerland, followed in turn by slipping sales in all of Scandinavia’s northern fringe car markets.

Norway, with the second double-digit fall in two months, stands out as the worst performer in this small northern league.
