W European heavy truck sales 2000 - 2017 sales trend

Decemberís headlong plunge in the UKís heavy truck market drags down the rest of Europe. Despite Decemberís sales dip, due chiefly to a statistical blip, last yearís third successive annual sales gain suggests that West Europeís long-lingering truck sales famine is finally over

Sales of heavy trucks in Western Europe dropped 5.9 per cent in December from the same month last year, according to data compiled by Acea

But it was not because truck operators were holding back to see whether the high consumer demand seen of late in much of continental Europe was holding up.

Decemberís comparatively strong decline could easily be attributable to between one and two fewer working days in the month than in December 2016.

The latest dive brings last yearís West Europeís cumulative heavy truck sales total to 244,706, up by a modest 1.4 per cent for the year.

Last yearís turnout also stands out as the best heavy truck sales year since 2008.

Decemberís sales turnout, echoing to an extent the same month performance of the regionís passenger car market, fell well short of year earlier levels in just over half the regionís markets.

Nevertheless, despite Decemberís working day handicap, a higher than earlier expected eight markets saw improved December sales.

A reflection of the underlying health of Europeís heavy truck market, December sales were higher in two of the regionís five major markets.
