W-European Plug-in sales history BEV PHEV

Plug-in cars, made up of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) in near equal measure, captured a best-ever 2 per cent of last yearís expanding West European passenger car market. According to AIDís own provisional full-year 2017 car sales figures, that follows a more than one-third jump to just over 282,000 sales. By close of last year BEVs and PHEVs each held a matching 1 per cent of West Europeís overall passenger car market. Petrol-powered cars, which made striking inroads into last yearís changing car market, together with fast-fading diesels, were still responsible for close on 98 per cent of last yearís West European new car market

Last yearís tight run race for the ultimate sales crown in West Europeís bubbling plug-in car market, ended with a neck-and-neck finish.

AIDís own provisional sales figures reveal that PHEVs narrowly outsold BEVs, but both BEVs and PHEVs completed last year with roughly half of West Europeís 282,000 unit plug-in car market.

Expressed in numbers, for all of last year thatís 48.5 per cent for BEVs and a slightly higher 51.5 per cent plug-in share for PHEVs.

Other than that, AIDís data reveals that in terms of most popular model per sub-segment there was no change at the very top.

Renaultís ZOE topped West Europeís BEV sales chart for yet another year.

In parallel, despite intensifying sub-sector competition, Mitsubishiís Outlander PHEV retained the coveted West European PHEV car sales crown, albeit with a slimmer winning margin.
