West European August car sales AID Newsletter

AID reports on the underlying positive change in this year’s West European new car market

Renewed car sales growth in August, which saw a notably faster than earlier expected 4.9 per cent rate of advance, adds further credence to the upbeat view that West Europe’s underlying car sales recovery still appears more buoyant than earlier anticipated.

Compared with the notably lower rates of advance seen in both June and July, August’s car sales pace is reminiscent of an upshift into a higher gear.

This is likely to tempt some forecasters to revise upwards earlier cautious car sales projections for the current year.

This year’s August trading was not distorted by a change in working days.

Almost three quarters through the year, AID compiled figures reveal that West Europe’s car market still looks in better mettle than generally expected.

Not only has the market refused to slow down a great deal during the second half, if August’s 4.9 per cent sales gain is taken as a guide, the market has not lost, but gained some notable underlying heat during this past month.

Last month’s near 5 per cent car sales gain comes hard on the heels of comparatively tiny respective car sales gains of 1.4 and 1.8 per cent during the summer
months of June and July.

Yet more good news on the sales front: AID forecasters believe that the hastily introduced scrappage incentives for old diesels in major markets such as Germany and the UK are likely to turn into a welcome shot in the arm for West Europe’s new car market.
