Germany’s August diesel car share slumps to lowest level for decade and a half

German diesel car sales trends 15 year history

Like Texan homeowners picking through the wreckage after the devastation of hurricane Harvey, Germany’s distressed carmakers are assessing the damage done to their domestic German diesel car market by the lingering fallout from Volkswagen’s dieselgate scandal

Germany’s shrinking diesel car sales share in August, giving a foretaste of what could be in store for the remaining months of this year, slumped to just 37.7 per cent according to latest KBA data.

Ignoring the one-off statistical distortions caused by Germany’s 2009 scrappage incentive boom, fuelled by spiralling demand for the cheapest petrol powered cars in Germany, this year’s August diesel car sales share marks the sector’s lowest ebb since April 2003.

This translates into Germany’s lowest monthly diesel car sales share for the past decade and a half.

Testament to European consumers’ fast fading interest in the region’s previously flourishing diesel car market, Germany’s August diesel car sales share slumped to just 37.7 per cent.

Drawing attention to the fast-slipping fortunes of this sector since the VW scandal broke in September 2015, Germany’s 37.7 per cent diesel car sales share this August was the way and ahead lowest level of that particular stretch.

Put into perspective, back in October 2015, just one month after the bombshell news of VW’s industrial scale cheating on diesel emissions, diesel cars were still responsible for nearly half of Germany’s new car market.
