Diesel car market pauses after losing sales share for 18 months running

Diesel car sales 2017 trends up to July

Is this a temporary blip or the first sign of a slowing deterioration in European diesel car sales? That is the question facing market observers, who are wondering whether Europe’s badly battered diesel car market is simply drawing breath after the expected and continuing steep loss of earlier held market share since the VW diesel scandal first broke with devastating effect in September 2015

July’s regional diesel car sales share dropped to a provisional 45.2 per cent from 50.7 per cent during the same month last year. However, for the battered and bruised European diesel car sector there is also one rare ray of light spelt out by the most recent AID compiled data.

For the second consecutive month running Europe’s badly battered diesel car market has not deteriorated any further.

Instead, the data shows that for the third month running West Europe’s diesel car sales share remained stuck at the low 45 per cent level.

But whether this is a mere blip or a mere pause on the steep slippery slope still remains to be seen.
