Japan car sales trends H1 2017 AID Newsletter

After more than a decade of hibernation, Japanís new car market appears to have woken up again

Like most of Western Europe, Japanís car market looks like a mature and saturated market.

And yet, after more than a decade of near stagnation, with annual car sales hovering around the 4.5 million annual domestic sales level, those looking close enough at latest Japanese car sales numbers will detect an extremely rare phenomenon: a rise in new car sales.

Juneís new car sales in Japan, buoyed by a continuing set of positive news from Japanís domestic economic front, grew by a strong 15.1 per cent.

A good start to 2017, with first-quarter economic growth exceeding expectations, was echoed in Japanís new car market.

If anything, Japanís car sales intensity picked up added momentum as the year wore on.
