May sees strong 7.1% car sales bounce in Western Europe

Western Europe passenger car sales May 2017

Buoyed primarily by a strongly rebounding economy, growing consumer confidence plus two additional working days in some of the regionís markets, West Europeís new car market this May grew 7.1 per cent to 1.3m units, according to provisional AID compiled figures. Last monthís sales bounce brings the regionís cumulative car sales tally to May to almost 6.4m units, thus beating sales during last yearís comparative 5-months period by a markedly stronger than earlier anticipated 4.3 per cent

The car marketís current state of health is such that only the UK and Ireland did not report a rise in May sales, according to AIDís own estimates.

Handicapped by this weekís parliamentary elections plus a March pre-buying binge prior to the rise in annual vehicle taxes for some green cars, Mayís UK car sales fell by a steeper than generally expected 8.5 per cent.

The second successive dip in UK new car sales has opened a slight 0.6 per cent sales deficit in the five months to May this year.

The SMMT, the UKís auto-industry federation said ďthe [June 8th UK] general election was always likely to give many pause for thought and affect purchasing patterns in the short termĒ
