BMW fighting fit, switching into assault mode

BMW, which has long dominated the world’s lucrative luxury car segment together with its blue-blooded German compatriots Mercedes and Audi, completed yet another year with another set of records. And yet, for 2017 BMW promises more of the same. Almost three month into the current year, and no detectable heat loss, for 2017 upbeat BMW is promising new record highs for deliveries, revenues and earnings, accompanied firstly by its imminent intention to go “on the offensive” and secondly by launching its biggest ever new product blitz

Apart from raising the bar for annual sales of BMW-badged cars to yet another new high – just over 2million sold units – last year’s automotive pre-tax profits reached €7,695m, only narrowly missing the year earlier €7,836m.

The same goes for BMW’s full year automotive margin, which, despite a slight rise in sales revenue, eased back to 8.9 per cent.

Last year stands out as BMW Group’s most successful financial year to date, the company said.

Although outsold by Mercedes on last year’s global prestige sector stage, BMW’s automotive arm, together with volume carmaker Toyota, still stands out as one of the world’s most successful and most consistent carmakers.

A case in point, last year marked the seventh successive year in a row that BMW’s pre-tax (EBIT) automotive margin “has been within our target range of 8 to 10 per cent or higher”, BMW said
