Frankfurt IAA Audi A8 Audi congress

Audi Ė one of three outstanding winners in West Europeís fiercely contested car market remains the old continentís leading prestige car brand. But apart from the imminent fallout from Volkswagen Groupís fast spreading diesel emission scandal, rivals BMW and Mercedes in particular are piling on the pressure. Both made it obvious that they won't stand idly by and watch Audi grab more market share in Europe or elsewhere

There is no debate, from a historical perspective Europeís prestige sector dominating carmakers Audi, BMW and Mercedes stand out as the regionís biggest gainers.

For some three decades, with their West European market shares closely bunched together, each prestige sector member - in near equal measure - continued to plunder the most profitable pastures of their unfortunate volume car rivals.

Testament to their unwavering sales gains in West Europeís changing new car market, the trioís sales share more than doubled since the early 1980s, with their substantial gains coming entirely out of mass-carmakersí pockets.
