Hundreds of thousands of confused would-be buyers of VW Group diesels in Europe could now turn to supposedly untainted clean diesels from rival manufacturers 

Germany’s Volkswagen Group, whose fragile Wolfsburg bunkers have attracted some of the heaviest shelling from the world’s media because of the raging diesel exhaust emission scandal, has been heavily reliant on the long-running good fortunes of Europe’s diesel car market, which its large family of car brands have long dominated. 

At the heart of today’s toxic and potentially deeply damaging diesel exhaust emission scandal are Volkswagen Group members Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda. 

For decades, Volkswagen Group has been heavily reliant on Europe’s diesel car market, which in recent years was responsible for just over half the new cars sold in the region
