West European car sales April 2015 AID Newsletter

Figures compiled by AID show that West Europe’s car market has started to recover some of its kick. After growing firmly for the past twenty months, this April saw yet another 6.8 per cent rise, thus keeping the market on track for a markedly better than earlier expected full year turnout. Barring the unpredictable, this year’s West European new car sales are currently running at an annualised rate of around 12.7m units, potentially topping last year’s turnout by just over half a million units

West Europe’s April car sales figures were the 20th set in a row to show volumes at levels above those recorded in the same month a year earlier.

Market observers took that to be a sign that the continuing and faster than earlier feared car sales recovery is still motoring along nicely.

April’s 6.8 per cent rise in new car sales, this year’s fourth rise in a row, brings the cumulative car sales total to 4.52m units after 4-months of lively trading, up 8.2 per cent over last years comparative first third total.

Signs that the underlying recovery has been remarkably even, of the 17 West European markets regularly monitored by AID, only Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg did not record a sales gain in April.

Encouraging signs that the now deeply entrenched rebound in sales is continuing to head into the right direction, April sales were well up on a year ago in all of the region’s main markets.

Particularly encouraging for the industry, April’s continuing sales bounce was fuelled in no small measure by a strong rebound in previously hard-struck Italy, which saw a robust 24.2 per cent surge in sales
