An exclusive AID investigation reveals that of late Audi’s grip on the hotly contested global prestige sector car market has weakened in the face of a bullish onslaught from its hard battling Mercedes rival. Maintaining its hot streak as the fastest-growing carmaker in the world’s still expanding prestige car segment, and judged on recent form, AID’s forecasters now believe that Mercedes could soon topple Audi as the world’s second biggest prestige carmaker.

One quarter through the current year, the global car sales gap between Audi in second place and Mercedes in third had shrunk to just 8,600 units.

Fast climbing Mercedes is snapping at the heels of slowing Audi, and when judged from the underlying global car sales trend seen during recent months, chances are that if not this year, then next year, Mercedes could conceivably nudge aside Audi as the second biggest seller of status-rich prestige cars on today’s hotly contested global stage.

Adding to hitherto unfamiliar feelings of trepidation at Audi’s Ingolstadt headquarters, confident Daimler in its recent guidance for the current year also predicted “significantly” higher Mercedes car sales matched for good measure by “significantly” higher profits from its fast advancing car arm.

These trends were echoed loud and clear during March itself. Whereas BMW and Audi increased their global March sales by a respective 5.1 and 4.4 per cent, Mercedes stormed ahead with a markedly hotter 15.7 per cent, according to AID compiled data
