German prices start at €26,075, climbing to just under €50,000 for the top spec all-wheel drive model. 

Can the all-new Passat, offered right from the start as both a saloon and estate, live up to its near-legendary high standing in Europe’s fleet market, which its has long dominated?

While chief Audi designer Marc Lichte has been charged with redesigning a new design era for Audi, Volkswagen with its award-winning all-new Passat looks ready to pounce if Audi gets too animated in its future design language.

Never a car that buyers would lust over, but here in Europe the mundane Passat is still the benchmark car in the sector, and consistently outsold its nearest sector rival more than twice over. 

Taking a recent snapshot, peak sales took place in 2011 when 243,847 Passats were sold in Western Europe, according to AID figures
