Poor European car sales year ends on upbeat note, AID compiled figures reveal
Car sales recovery in Western Europe has now seen 15 successive months of unbroken growth

Fears of a slowing car sales recovery in Western Europe, sparked by a paltry 1 per cent advance in November, have proved to be overly pessimistic. 

AID compiled figures
show that Decemberís healthier-looking 4.2 per cent rise to almost 919,000 sales was broad based. 

Decemberís new car sales were up in a dozen of West Europeís 18 markets, paced by marked gains in four of the regions five main markets. 

France, with a 6.8 per cent drop in December, stands out as the main laggard in the pack of major markets

To the relief of Europeís still anxious volume carmakers and importers, Novemberís near unchanged sales gave way to a notably healthier looking 4.2 per cent rise in December sales, resulting in a 4.8 per cent uplift in full year sales to 12.1 million units. 

Despite a better than earlier feared car sales year, the not so good news is that the regionís recession battered car market still trails sales in pre-crisis 2007 by close on 2.7 million units, according to AID figures

Pouring buckets of cold water on isolated flickers of optimism, todayís consensus expectation in auto analyst circles is that it will still take the best part of this decade to get back to the 14 million plus annual car sales last seen in the early to mid 2000s.
