With eyes focused not so much on today’s Chinese patterns of new car demand, but
instead on the future potentially expanding market for cheaper, more fuel-efficient and
more compact prestige-badge cars in China, Mercedes and its BAIC partner gave notice
of their intention to build more of Mercedes’ compact cars in China
Daimler, in a joint statement with its Chinese partner BAIC Motor Corporation said it would now
expand its current annual production of its new compact car range in China, requiring a
joint-investment of €1bn for the announced compact car capacity expansion.
That’s part of the planned intention to jointly invest €4bn by
2015 in their joint Chinese operation.
