Germany’s car manufacturers, well versed in finding the bad news, earlier this month breathed a fractional sigh of relief as a reaction to a 5.2 per cent rise in Germany’s September new car sales, and immediately began to worry about the likely turnout in domestic sales during the closing months of this year

The good news for both German carmakers and importer alike is that the market’s latest pendulum swing went into the right direction, with September figures showing a 5.2 per cent sales gain. 

The not so good news is that this year’s German new car market, like Germany’s economy, has been a great deal more volatile than earlier hoped.

After a promising looking start to this year, with sales rising for three successive months, since the beginning of the second quarter underlying demand began to stutter. 

Since the beginning of the second quarter sales activity has dipped in April, June and July. 

These sudden erratic swings in demand simply couldn’t fail but place a renewed question mark over the true underlying strength of Germany’s car sales recovery
