Opel-Vauxhall details its squeaky-clean 2-litre SCR diesel engine

Opel Vauxhall 2.0 litre Diesel engine Euro 6

First details of an ultra-low emission 4-cylinder 2.0 litre passenger car diesel engine aimed principally to power its larger and heavier EU 6 compatible cars and Crossovers from next year have been revealed by GM’s European Opel-Vauxhall offshoot. 

Unlike the bulk of its earlier unveiled 1.6 litre EU 6 compatible diesel engine - intended largely for smaller and lighter cars - the new 2.0 litre unit overcomes next year’s high Euro 6 diesel emission hurdle not with a NOx storage catalyst, but by way of a notably more complex SCR (Selective-Catalytic-Reduction) system, today’s most efficient method to eliminate diesel engine-generated NOx.

Apart from the obligatory need to comply with forever tightening exhaust emission levels, in a market like Europe, where more than half the new cars sold are still diesel powered, carmakers are left with no alternative but to ensure that their diesel-powered vehicles do not lack the sparkle and fuel-economy expectations that today’s and tomorrow’s buyers are going to expect.
