America’s consumers, encouraged by gradually brightening skies, have not only rediscovered their formerly subdued appetite for shiny new cars, but if recent vehicle sales trends are read correctly, we are witness to a rekindled US love-affair for both Crossovers and even larger conventional Sports-Utilities

This year’s car buying season got off to a slow start, raising doubts about the true strength of this year’s underlying US demand. 

However, fast forward just a couple of months, and these harboured concerns were quickly brushed aside after an altogether more lively second quarter when America’s still chill-gripped vehicle market first started budding again.

A severe and lingering cold spell during the early part of this year may have played its part in keeping consumers away from dealer showrooms. 

A case in point, first quarter US Light-Vehicle sales barely grew at all, expanding by a pedestrian 1.4 per cent against the same period last year.
