Daimler new steel diesel piston technology

Mercedes-Benz, which prides itself as a pioneer in the increasingly complex field of passenger car diesel engines, has come full-circle in the development and material choice of diesel engine piston technology. Unlike the conventional material choice for todayís massively complex passenger car diesel engines, where aluminium pistons still dominate, starting with its V6 diesel, Mercedes says it is the first carmaker to switch to steel pistons

Odd as it may seem, but the carmaker says that the switch from aluminium to steel pistons, at a time when light-weight aluminium is still seen as the silver bullet for vehicle weight reductions, is the right move and brings a host of advantages
