West Europe’s July new car sales grow for 11th time in a row
West Europe’s new car sales in July were 5 per cent higher than a year ago and have now risen for eleven successive months, AID compiled figures reveal

Magnifying the lingering surplus capacity crisis, AID compiled figures also reveal that this year’s seven months car sales in Western Europe still trail sales during the corresponding 7-months period in pre-crisis 2007 by nearly 1.8 million cars. 

Put into context, that corresponds to the average annual output of seven average size car assembly plants in Europe. 

The pain being inflicted is felt mainly by some volume carmakers, whilst the region’s prestige car makers, in pin-sharp contrast, can still sell every car pouring off their still humming and overstretched car assembly lines.

In the seventeen West European markets regularly monitored by AID July sales were up on a year ago in thirteen markets. 

Apart from France, where July sales fell 4.3 per cent, thanks in part to one fewer working day, only Austria, the Netherlands and Finland reported a small drop in sales during July. 

On the plus side, key regional markets such as Germany and the UK, where July car sales rose by a respective 6.8 and 6.6 per cent, are still continuing to march into the right direction. 

The same goes for other major markets such as Spain and Italy, which saw July sales gains of a respective 10.9 and 5.1 per cent.
