Up hill European car market May 2014

Car sales in Western Europe rose 3.6 percent in May, the ninth straight month of unbroken car recovery growth, according to provisional AID compiled data.

Moreover, in support of those who were banking on a gradual and still fragile looking European car sales recovery, May sales in France were virtually unchanged, following a markedly livelier 5.8 per cent gain only the month before.

Provisional AID compiled figures show that May sales were higher than a year ago in a dozen market, with the fastest year-on-year gains reported in the now strongly recovering markets of Portugal, Spain and Greece.

Apart from Italy, only Austria, Belgium, Finland and Switzerland saw minor falls this May.

The latest single-digit rise in West Europe’s car sales brings the regional cumulative car sales total to 5.2m after 5-months of unbroken recovery growth.

That’s 5.8 per cent up on the same period last year, according to AID’s own provisional estimates
