Spring is in the air for West Europe’s car market
6th successive month of unbroken car sales growth, according to provisional AID compiled figures

West Europe’s car industry enjoys yet another month of good news – February car sales up 6.1 per cent – 6th successive month of unbroken car sales growth, according to provisional AID compiled figures

Calendar wise we are still in winter. But when judged from yet another car sales gain, this time with a 6.1 per cent sales advance this February, suddenly spring is in the air. 

This February’s West European car sales gain to some 0.82 million cars, marks the sixth successive gain in a row and the second biggest increase during this particular spell. 

Moreover, as in previous months, signs are that finally spring-has-sprung across most of Western Europe. 

February’s car sales were up on a year ago in no fewer than 14 of the region’s 17 markets. 

That includes four of the region’s five major markets.

Tellingly, with a 17.8 per cent sales gain, Spain saw the fastest growth, followed in turn by an encouraging 8.5 per cent rise in Italy. 

News of yet another good car sales month in both Germany and the UK, where February’s car sales rose by a respective 4.3 and 3 per cent, was marred only by a small setback in France where February sales eased back by just 1.4 per cent.

Paradoxically perhaps, compared to the US, where to date Light-Vehicle sales have now failed to better last year’s same month levels for the second month in a row, Western Europe saw six consecutive months of car sales increases - reasons for a markedly more upbeat mood in Europe’s previously gloom-struck autoindustry circles.
