Europe’s prestige sector records just keep on tumbling - Mercedes fightback

Propelled along by an avalanche of genuine new models, best typified perhaps by its all-new generation of A-class based cars, Mercedes bucked last year’s West European car sales trend. 

In a mildly recessionary market, down less than 2 per cent, Mercedes posted a strong 5.1 per cent rise in full year sales to 601,800 units, thus crowning the world’s longest-established prestige brand as the fastest gainer in the pack.

Mercedes’ full year car sales share in Western Europe rose to 5.2 per cent, thus setting a new all-time record for the brand.

Despite Mercedes’ excellent showing in last year’s domestic European backyard, and after notching up a new personal best, compared to its nearest rivals it still continues to play third fiddle, after still finding itself outsold by both Audi and BMW
