The Volkswagen group suffered a setback last month. 

It was a poor July for the region’s towering market leader, which sailed through Europe’s bruising autoindustry crisis without any outwardly visible damage, and remains on course this year to capture a highest-ever slice of the region’s otherwise decimated new car market.

Pulled back by a comparatively poor showing in its domestic July market, where sales of the Volkswagen marque fell 5.1 per cent at a time when Germany’s overall car market posted a rare sales improvement, VW last month sold 3.4 per cent fewer cars in West Europe’s higher July market.
