Gloom is beginning to lift
July sees first recovery signs in Europe’s previously worst hit car markets

Kindling hope that the worst may well be over, July sales were up on a year ago in previously slump struck main markets such as Spain and France, posting respective gains of 14.9 and 0.9 per cent. 

There was more good news from Germany, where July sales rose 2.1 per cent - only the second month this year that sales topped last year’s levels.

Telling the same upbeat tale, some of the region’s hardest struck markets like Greece and Portugal also posted higher sales in July, beating last year’s corresponding sales by a respective, 12.1 and 16.1 per cent.

If ever proof of a likely recovery was needed, it is surely that Greece, the hardest-hit car market in the region, saw a 12.1 per cent rise in July sales, thus cutting its cumulative car sales deficit at the seven months stage to just 3.7 per cent.
