The market debut of Renault’s ZOE, widely seen as the most serious industry attempt to date offering both a purpose-built and affordable electric car in Europe, is mirrored by a substantial uplift in regional electric car sales, adding some much needed gloss to Europe’s hitherto frail and lifeless electric car market. 

New sector entries from other leading car makers, like this week’s unveiling of BMW’s innovative new i3 - due to go on sale in Europe this November - are expected to give Europe’s electric car market a boost in the early months of next year.

French electric car registrations in June


AID’s exclusively compiled data shows that West Europe’s electric car sales in June rose by almost three-quarters to just over 3,000 units, propelled along in the main by ZOE’s expected initial pole-vault jump in its domestic French market. 

A case in point, thanks almost entirely to ZOE’s home debut, French electric car registrations in June rose more than eightfold to 903 units. 

This compares with a mere 112 overall electric car registrations during June of last year
