When recession strikes, and cost pressures become paramount, more of Europe’s cash strapped new car buyers gravitate towards markedly cheaper petrol-fuelled small cars. The inevitable consequence, as witnessed in earlier regional downturns, demand for generally larger and pricier diesel-powered cars weakens

An AID investigation into this year’s consumer car buying habits reveals that this recession-gripped year, with West European car sales heading for their lowest level in a quarter of a century, is no exception to these temporary and well understood trend diversions.

AID’s trend-watchers believe that this is yet another well understood market development likely to change as the markets pick-up again, rather than a fundamental shift in underlying consumer car purchasing patterns
